Digitalized handwriting of my left hand
November 2009
ADM November 2009 Semester Show
"Metarcarpal" is a workable typeface designed based on my handwriting of my left hand.
I am ambidextrous; or more accurately, I am born left-handed, but I was trained by my parents to be right-handed in early childhood. Although I demonstrate a high degree of ambidexterity, my left hand writing remains at the standard of primary school level. Nevertheless, my left hand is still the preferred and dominant hand to perform tasks and carrying heavy objects. My left hand is also heavily utilized for playing musical instruments and driving of cars and bikes.
Furthermore, I have a unique (pencil) grip. I would hold a pen with the tip of my thumb and index finger, resting the pen on the 2nd joint of my index finger. I believe that my grip has an influence on my handwriting.
In February 2007, I fractured my left 3rd metacarpal during an accident in army. As such, my left hand was cast for 3 months. Although I regained back much control and mobility of my left hand through multiple occupation therapy sessions, there is still signs of muscle atrophy, aching and inflexibility. Therefore, I would like to digitalize my current left hand writing as a documentation.

haiya taxi jam and groove slowly in circles from clarke quay pubs to zouk

"traffic pangram" is a collaboration with Bi Xia, Cheng Guan and Daven.
This pangram installation is inspired by traffic signs. Road users are exposed to many of these signs daily and are likely to examine them when stuck in a traffic jam. To ease the frustration one might get in a jam; this installation has manipulated traffic signs in a playful manner to fit the pangram.
The pangram is to be read from right to left, like the flow of traffic in Singapore. Choice of font (Eurostile deconstruct) used is kept simple yet distinctive, creating interesting visuals both on its own and designed as a sign. The signs are printed on the same materials as actual traffic signs, hence producing the reflective effect. For best result, take a photo of this installation in flash mode to see the effect.

This is a deconstruct type design project. The objective of this project is to deconstruct a font into minimal visual clues but yet still able to convey language information.
By eliminating part of the outline, Eurostile is deconstruct into a single line, with the exception of i and j. Most of the elimination take place at the left outer half or the bottom half of the base font. One tail of the ascender or descender is preserve to create identity.

Eurostile deconstruct
Eurostile deconstruct was used as the typeface for the environmental type installation "traffic pangram", a collaboration with Bi Xia, Cheng Guan and Daven. "traffic pangram" was showcased at City Hall, in Professor Jesvin Yeo exhibition "Beyond Typography – Singapore Pangram", during Singapore Design Festival 2009 (November 2009).

This is a hybrid type design project. The objective of this project is to combine elements of a serif and sans serif typeface to create a hybrid font that exhibits characteristics of both.
My concept is to combine geometric serif Rockwell with geometric sans serif Eurostile to form Euro-Rock. The serif of Rockwell is added to the body of Eurostile. For o, the other circle is Rockwell while the inner is Eurostile.
