Biography



A 4th generation Singaporean born and raised in Tampines, Boon Ping is a multidisciplinary urban planner, designer and artist, who is passionate about maps and urban planning.

Boon Ping is an Urban Planner in Jurong Town Corporation (JTC). He develops masterplans and urban design guidelines for the redevelopment of Jurong and Tuas Industrial Estates, and the planning of MRT CRL3 stations. He also conducts research, analysis and draw structural plans for the proposed Sungei Tengah Industrial Estate.

Boon Ping received the Cheong Koon Hean Scholarship to study Master of Urban Planning (MUP) at National University of Singapore (NUS). Boon Ping’s research interests are in urban redevelopment; public housing; history and identity of places; sub-national boundaries; and relationship between urban planning and everyday life. He scored a distinction for his dissertation "Overlapping Boundaries: Assessing the impact of inconsistent sub-national boundaries on urban planning and identity of places in Singapore".
Before his sabbatical for full-time graduate studies, Boon Ping was as an Urban Planner in the Ministry of National Development (MND) Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC), Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Singapore Land Authority (SLA). As an urban planner, Boon Ping was involved in the planning process of shaping the urban landscape of Singapore. He works closely with various government agencies on master planning proposals that includes Bidadari Estate, Punggol Northshore neighbourhood, Springleaf study area, former Bukit Timah Turf Club study area, Sungei Tampines ABC project, Seletar Airport new passenger terminal, MRT North East Line extension and assorted in-fill developments within the Northeast Region. He collaborates with the community and local stakeholders to improve local planning and development coordination within Tampines New Town for the "Reimagining Tampines” project. Boon Ping also participated in a three-day workshop with urban planners of Thimphu Thromde to brainstorm a structure plan, pedestrianization guidelines and a set of urban design guidelines for the rejuvenation of Norzin Lam, the main thoroughfare of Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city. In addition, Boon Ping was assigned to be in charge of several Geospatial projects, like the production of sample maps for agencies to show SLA’s land ownership overlay criteria and the aesthetic revamp of OneMap.

Boon Ping loves maps. His first encounter with maps was in Primary 3 when his father bought a new edition of "Singapore Street Directory". A casual flip got him curious over the cartography. Through the process of exploring the book, Boon Ping fell in love with maps. From then onwards, Boon Ping started collecting maps, drawing futuristic maps of new towns and future MRT lines from his imagination. His passion in maps and geography drove him to score distinctions for relevant subjects in school, equipped him with strong navigation skills and triggered a keen interest in urban planning. Over the years, his knowledge in cartography and urban planning are further developed, providing valuable contributions to his work. He is constantly exploring using cartography as an alternative form of visualization.

Besides MUP, Boon Ping also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Visual Communication from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) School of Art, Design & Media (ADM). Trained as a graphic designer, Boon Ping designed several publications that utilized cartography to visualize memories, imagination and local socio-cultural topics. His experience in art and design broadens his perspectives and stimulates transferrable soft skills in pattern analyzation, critical thinking and creative problem solving.

Boon Ping was appointed as a Town Councillor of Tampines Town Council; he sits on the Sustainability & Projects Committee as Vice-Chairman. He aims to further enhance the living environment of Tampines through sustainable initiatives during his term. Boon Ping volunteers at PAP Tampines North Branch as an Editor for the weekly Meet-the-People Sessions. Boon Ping also volunteers at Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC) as a Helper for the Alpha Programme.

Boon Ping is an INTJ. Boon Ping survived and recovered from a benign brain tumour in May 2020. Besides maps, Boon Ping has profound interests in music, landscape photography, leather crafting, dragonboat, weight training, hip hop dancing and running. He constantly aim and challenge himself to develop new skills. Boon Ping believes that he can achieve anything through hard work and the best is yet to be.
